This week's order of business is a very dark comedy that shows us the destructive forces in the world today of commericalism and reality-tv. This comes in the form of the movie "God Bless America". This is a dark story of one man's unravelling as he views the vileness of the overconsumption the popultion is making. This man wants to rid the world of the most repellent of citizens.
It is a very dark and violent look at where we are headed as a society and with the recent Colorado tragedy, may give a little insight as what goes on in people's heads when the decide to go down that dark road of destruction.
Joel Murray from "Shameless" fame stars as Frank, a terminally ill man who decides that he has had enough of the stupidity of people in life that he takes it upon himself to rid the world of these so called stupid people. He targets celebrities, politicians, reality-tv stars, and any other person he feels that is adding to teh stupidty and downfall of society. Murray is a sensation to watch on screen, with his sarcastic delivery of dialogue and his actions that can make one uncomfortable at times watching the mayhem that Frank brings to these people of America. He thinks that doing this, he is doing the world a service by killing these people as he comes across them.
Frank has a partner in crime, Roxy, a 16 year old girl played by Tara Lynne Barr, who is best know for the shows Drake and Josh and Zoey 101 as well as The Suite Life of Zack and Cody. Roxy is a girl on the run from her family and shares the same sentiment on the world as Frank does. She doesn't mind coming along for the ride, racking up a body count as they see as useless people who need to be taught a lesson. I guess the lesson they are trying to get across was that stupidity will cause your death. This is quite the break out role for her and really shows that she has the chops to be in a movie of this tone and substance. At one point it seems that she is starting to develope real feelings for Frank and looked as if there were going to be a relationship starting up.
Everything about this movie is wrong, but it is so well made and well directed by Bobcat Goldthwait from The Police Academy movies and Shakes the Clown. He is gifted director and doesn't shy away from the offensive material. I felt that this was a story that he needed to tell, a kind of a middle finger to America tell them we need to wake up and see where we are headed and if we don't try and change our ways then this could become something that we fear. His feature directing debute was a movie called World's Greatest Dad, another dark style comedy from Goldthwait. These movies show that he as a talent behind the camera and knows how to bring a story our and craft something that makes us think. God Bless America is a vile movie, and is offensive, but in the same time it is also engaging and alot of that is because of Goldthwait's handle of how to take something and make it engaging and make people talk about it afterwards.
This movie is definitely an eye opener and probably a movie that will fall under the radar. It's a definite watch a worth while rental. It may be offensive, it maybe hard to watch in some scenese, but it is engaging and the acting, the writing and the directing all make it worth it.
I give this movie 4 stars out of 5. Check it out if you haven't already.
